Mountain Biking
Maniototo is the Mountain biker’s paradise. From the highly acclaimed Otago Central Rail Trail, to the many tracks in and around Naseby, there is something for every skill level. Maniototo has great weather for mountain biking, as the long, hot summers provide soil that rarely becomes muddy. Guided mountain biking is also available.

4WD Safaris
Take a journey of discovery into the heart of Central Otago, on a 4WD Safari with experienced local tour operators. Venture into the remote tussock lands, through gold fields and one of the the Lord of the Rings New Zealand film locations. You can also customize your tour to include time at the Naseby Indoor Curling Rink.

Heritage Experiences

The Otago Central Rail Trail is one of the district’s most popular and well known heritage experiences. Cycle or walk through 150 kilometres of some of New Zealand’s most stunning scenery and revel in fascinating New Zealand gold mining history.

Other Heritage Experiences include, the Rural Art Deco Gallery and Walk in Ranfurly, Maniototo Early Settlers Museum in Naseby, and the Haynes Engineering Works, the Oturehua Store and the Golden Progress Mine in Oturehua. For a great place to photograph, visit Styx Jail and Pub, just before Dunstan, beside the Taieri River. For more information visit the Maniototo website.

Tramping and Walks
Maniototo offers tramping and walking tracks to envy all others. The Naseby Forest has a range of walks to keep you on the move, or enjoy a stroll down the Sowburn River. Any one of the small Maniototo towns provides a lovely walk, where you can take your time, exploring the history of the township. Don’t forget the Otago Central Rail Trail - which follows the former Otago Central branch railway line for 150km.

Swimming
If you’re visiting Maniototo in the hot summer months, look no further than Naseby Swimming Dam, one of the most popular local spots to cool off! The Kyeburn and Sowburn Rivers also offer great swimming holes to keep you cool. Don’t forget that the Naseby Indoor Curling Rink is open all year long, providing an amazing place to visit with friends and family, on a hot Central Otago day.

Fishing

Taieri River is often described as Maniototo’s ‘best kept Fisherman’ secret’. The Taieri River fans out into the Styx Valley Wetlands, providing great fishing for the spin angler. Contact the Ranfurly Information Centre for fishing guidelines in the area.

Hunting
Hunting is a major sport in Maniototo. From pigs, to rabbits, to deer, ducks and quail, Maniototo comes alive in hunting season. Duck shooting season begins in May, creating a festival like feeling in the small towns. Many locals return for the season to join in the local tradition.
